Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

For adults living with a mental health disorder, there can be times when conditions grow so severe they require intensive care. The Inpatient PICU at Mayhill Hospital uses evidence-based treatment methods to alleviate the primary symptoms of acute mental health disorders. The unit’s purpose is to help patients stabilize and minimize the risk of harm to self or others.

Once stabilized, a patient may be allowed to step-down to a less intensive treatment program. The attending clinician will determine the appropriate level of follow-up care if necessary.

Some Conditions Addressed in PICU

  • Severe depression
  • Acute stress disorder
  • Psychosis
  • Personality disorders
  • Mania
  • Schizophrenia
  • Trauma
